The Confined Space Rescue Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive document outlining the safety steps for rescue operations in confined spaces. It does not provide detailed instructions for rescue as these differ in each circumstance.

This SWMS does not cover confined spaces rescues in a mine shaft or workings of a mine or the “High Risk Construction Work” for working on or near overhead power lines or underground services in sufficient detail. Ensure that a site and task specific SWMS is developed to include emergency procedures applicable to the confined space where work will be conducted.

Rescues in a confined space pose additional dangers because they are usually not designed to be areas where people work. Confined spaces often have poor ventilation which allows hazardous atmospheres to quickly develop, especially if the space is small. The hazards aren’t always obvious and they can change over time.

Examples of confined spaces might include vats, tanks, pits, pipes, ducts, flues, chimneys, silos, pressure vessels, underground sewers, wet or dry wells and shafts, when these examples meet the definition of a confined space.

Main hazards include:

-       Asphyxiation - lack of oxygen
-       Exposure to hazardous atmosphere – exposure to harmful, toxic or flammable gases, vapours or fumes
-       Falls - from one level to another
-       Electric shock/Electrocution
-       Crushing
-       Engulfment
-       Entrapment
-       Fire / explosion
-       Drowning
-       Slips, trips and falls on the same level
-       Hazardous manual handling
-       Exposure to biological hazards

SWMS - Safe Work Method Statement

Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) are required for any high risk activity that is performed by an employee in the workplace. Each document must identify the risks involved when performing the activity, a risk rating for each risk, a safe work method to perform the activity and a residual risk rating for the risks. SafetyCulture SWMS comply with current WH&S legislation in all states across Australia. This document is fully completed with a step by step procedure that can be edited and appended. This is not a blank template, it is a comprehensive procedure that has been researched and developed by a qualified writer.
