Gator Utility Information:
The Gator Utility Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 13 page procedure outlining the safety steps for the use of a Gator Ute.
The Gator Utility Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.
Gator Utilities can be dangerous and easily roll over. The term "All Terrain Vehicle" can be misleading, as these vehicle do have limitations and cannot be operated on all terrain - such as slippery surfaces, steep slopes etc. The manufacturer's operating manual MUST be read before any person operates a Gator as each model will have its own specific limitations. Persons under 16 should not operate Gator Utilities.
The Gator Utility Work Method Statement can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.
The Gator Utility includes:
- Safety Notes
- Pre-Operational Inspection
- Clean-up & Maintenance
- Emergency Procedures
Ensure vehicle is suitable for task:
- Load capacity
- Weight of load
- Location of load
- Attachment weight
- Weight of operator
- Type of towed items required (eg: spray tank)
- Type of terrain
- Slippery surface, steep slopes, hilly surface
- Rocky, muddy, sandy, water present
- Fencing (can be hard to see, limit space)
- Level of operator experience
Inspect intended travel paths. Plan route to eliminate danger areas, such as:
- Rocky areas / Steep slopes
- River / Creek crossing
- Pavement / roads
- Overhead branches
- Long grass that could hide stumps, root systems, animal burrows, fencing etc
Establish 'no go zones' for the work site where areas are too dangerous for Gator or the requirements for the Gator exceed manufacturer's recommendations.
Note: Gators must not be operated on public roadways or in areas where they will interact with cars/vehicles.
Plan communication system for working alone. Ensure supervisor notified of leaving time, the intended work route and the expected return time. Provide reliable communication devices. Ensure mobile phone has service.
