The Underground Services – Locating – Air Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive procedure outlining the safety steps for the use of compressed air to locate underground services.
The Underground Services – Locating – Air Work Method Statement (WMS) is ready to use and is not a blank template. This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) provides guidance on conducting compressed air excavation (Pot-holing) for underground service locating. This SWMS covers the planning and preparation of the activity, transport of a trailered diesel compressor, equipment and Utilitrac vacuum unit, Safe setup and operation of all equipment, maintenance, review and emergency management procedures.
Any work associated with excavation is considered construction work under S289 (2) (f) of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011. Section 291 (a–r) further defines ‘high risk construction’ tasks that require a Safe Work Method Statement to be in place before commencing activity.
This SWMS does not cover in detail the following:
- Work that involves the disturbance of Asbestos
- Work carried out near or in a Confined Space
- Work that may be carried out near Pressurised Gas distribution mains
- Work carried out near Energised Electrical services
- Work carried out on or near to a road, rail or other traffic corridor
A dedicated SWMS addressing these items must be put in place if applicable and used in conjunction with this SWMS
