Excavation and trench cave-ins can happen in seconds with no warning, burying workers under tons of soil. Any excavation deeper than 1.5 metres is prescribed High-Risk Construction Work under WHS Regulation 291 and requires an engineered shoring box, benching, or battering system.
Hierarchy of Hazard Control Measures (2026 Standards)
- Underground Utility Scanning: DBYD / BYDA utility plans + electromagnetic and GPR location.
- Ground Support: Certified trench shielding, hydraulic shoring, or 45-degree soil battering.
- Access & Egress: Secured ladders every 9 metres inside trenches extending 1m above ground.
