Key Regulatory Takeaways

  • Excavations > 1.5m legally require engineered shoring boxes or 45-degree battering.
  • Always positively identify underground services via vacuum potholing before mechanical digging.
  • Maintain a strict 1.0m safety setback for all spoil piles and heavy machinery.
  • Provide secured ladders within 9m of any worker inside the trench.

The Hidden Hazards Beneath Construction Ground

Excavation accidents remain among the most dangerous events on civil projects. Soil collapse occurs with zero audible warning, giving workers inside trenches less than half a second to escape.

1. Mandatory Shoring at 1.5 Metres

Under modern WHS regulations, any trench deeper than 1.5m must be protected with certified trench boxes, hydraulic shoring shields, or benched at the certified safe soil angle.

2. Vacuum Potholing: The Non-Destructive Standard

Never dig blindly with backhoe buckets within 1.0m of marked utility lines. Always use hydro-vacuum potholing to physically expose the line first.

3. Spoil Surcharge & Safe Ingress

Keep spoil heaps at least 1.0m back from the edge and place secured access ladders within every 9 metres of worker travel.
